Hope by Mike Welch

Today’s blog post is written by my Dad!

A little bit about my Dad… I might be bias but I think he’s the best! I’ve always looked up to him for his wisdom and he’s always inspired me. He’s the Pastor of Capital City Church in Ottawa where we’ve been for 20 years. He’s travelled the world with missions and outreaches and has spoken in some crazy places. The core of his heart has been, and always will be, to help people. And he’ll do anything to just help one.

He also has a terrific sense of humour and is a hilarious story teller – just ask to hear his Eeyore voice! I get my sweet tooth from him so we’re quite often talking politics or religion over a bowl of ice cream… funny picture of us and ice cream is at the end of this post! 😆

I asked him to write a special guest blog post to share a little piece of wisdom with us. Hope you enjoy it!

Its amazing how we live in such a blessed country yet so many people lack hope.

Do you know that there is more depression in Canada and America than any place in the world?

People should have so much hope but yet many feel hopeless.

I was studying out Romans 8:24 – 30. These verses have some powerful truths about our quality of life.

24. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?

25. But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

26. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

28. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

29. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Notice how the word hope is used five times in verses 24 & 25.  Another word for hope is expectation.   Our hope should be in and for Gods plans and purposes for our lives rather than the physical gratification so many people run after.

When we live using our faith to receive what we are hoping for, which is Gods vision and plans for our lives, verse 26 tells us how the Spirit {God} helps us in our weaknesses.  The Word “helps” actually means He takes hold of.”  He hears and sees our faith and empowers us. He brings the answers to our prayers. When He takes hold of our lives we start seeing the goodness of God in our lives.

Jeremiah 29:11 tells us that Gods plans for us are good! When we purpose to live our lives according to Gods will and ways, thats when our lives really can take off.

The famous verse 28, And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose, is not a stand alone verse.  It has to be understood in context with the previous verses.  Yes, all things will work together for good when we are pursuing Gods Word, will and His way for our lives.

The book of 1 John tells us we demonstrate our love toward God by keeping His commandments or by having obedience, and we find our calling from God and pursue His plan and purpose for our lives.

Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV tells us,  Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Isnt that something?  God saved us to work with Him to share the message of Jesus to a hopeless world because Jesus is HOPE!

Ive found that my real happiness and contentment is found in living out Gods plan for my life.  We live in a world of instant gratification, with little hope.   Gods plan is for us to live everyday hoping and believing for His plan for our life to unfold.  Little by little, bit by bit we will see it happen.  Every time we see another part of Gods plan for our life come to pass it raises our level of hope for the next step.

I see verses 29 and 30 as the confirmation.  Gods plan for us is so amazing!

Verse 30: Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Look at the path God has designed for us to live a life full of HOPE:

Predestined before we were born – God has it all worked out; even when it might not seem like it!

called into His good plan – His plans are always good and only good!

justified (declared righteousness) – if we are born again we are just as righteous as Jesus!

glorified when we enter Heaven Eternity forever is the goal!

I encourage you to find Gods plan for your life, then pursue Gods plan, that will give us a life of hope and fulfillment!
