My thoughts on… Easter

I started writing this on Palm Sunday; the day Jesus entered Jerusalem leading up to His crucifixion. As He entered Jerusalem the people welcomed Him by waving palm branches. Did you know that palms represent goodness and victory? It’s interesting to me that they welcomed Jesus with Palms [goodness & victory] as He entered the last week of His life.

Sometimes Easter can be an oversight to so many of us due to the busyness of life. It can be overshadowed by cute bunnies and yummy chocolates… which I take full part in! However, as we enter Holy Week, I encourage you to keep your focus on what really matters, the new life that was found in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. I grew up in church my whole life and I’ve been a pastor’s kid for most of those years! So Easter is basically part of my DNA! I only really started appreciating Easter as I got older. Easter to me is like a reset in my relationship with Jesus. It makes me pause on life, as I sit through church and hear the Easter story or sing a song next weekend, I know that I will shed a tear because when I think about what Jesus was put through I just can’t help it. If you’re unfamiliar with the story of Easter I encourage you to watch the Bible series (the one the History channel did a few years back) its on Netflix now too. It’s really the best one out there! Or if you want to check out what the Bible says, I encourage you to download a free Bible app like YouVersion or She Reads Truth.

So this weekend we have Good Friday and Easter Sunday coming up:

Good Friday; the day Jesus was crucified. It’s a dark day in history but it was such a necessary day. There’s even a celebratory side to Good Friday. I might’ve blown your mind with that last sentence. Let me put it this way, religion likes the sadness of Good Friday. But once you experience a relationship with God you realize that religion plays no part in your relationship. Religion is man-made rules &  traditions but what God[Jesus] longs for is a relationship with us. Actually, a spiritual relationship with God would never be possible if the dark doomsday of Good Friday never happened. Because of Good Friday we have Easter Sunday. You see, after Good Friday, 3 days later, Jesus rose from the grave! And because of this, we’re able to have a relationship with Him today and we have the guarantee that we’ll spend eternity with Him in Heaven. SO powerful!! This is why I am SO thankful for Good Friday.

Without Good Friday there would be no Easter Sunday. It’s the happiest day of the year to me because we get to celebrate the resurrection of our Creator. I love this week leading up to Resurrection Sunday. I strive to live a life of thankfulness each day but something about Easter makes me extra thankful – I think because I am more aware of God’s goodness in my life. I was driving to work this morning and instead of the radio I decided to listen to my worship playlist on my commute. I had an interview this morning so I was just praying and meditating for that while driving so the radio wasn’t fitting. The song 100 billion X by Hillsong Worship came on and this verse touched me:

And as You speak
A hundred billion failures disappear
Where You lost Your life so I could find it here
If You left the grave behind You so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You’ve done
Every part designed in a work of art called love
If You gladly chose surrender so will I
I can see Your heart
Eight billion different ways
Every precious one
A child You died to save
If You gave Your life to love them so will I
Like You would again a hundred billion times
But what measure could amount to Your desire
You’re the One who never leaves the one behind

I love the line, Where You lost Your life so I could find it here. To me, this means that Jesus went to the cross and gave up His earthly life so that we could find eternal life in Him. Amazing!

I can see Your heart in everything You’ve done
Every part designed in a work of art called love

No matter how you celebrate Easter, no matter how you approach this weekend, my prayer is that you know how loved & adored you are by a living and true God!

Happy Easter! XO!
